Escaping the Crisis?

A few weeks ago, I visited a casino for the first time. I wasn't there to gamble- just to have lunch- but I couldn't help but notice how busy the casino was. I'll admit I was surprised at first. I wasn't expecting the place to be hopping like it was during this economic crisis of ours. But then I started thinking that maybe people were using it as an outlet. I'm not sure if my escapist theory is true...if people are actually looking for things to distract them from their financial troubles. People may be turning to things like alcohol, movies and books to, as Billy Joel said, "forget about life for a while." Yes, even gambling. It may seem silly to be throwing your money away a quarter at a time at this point, but just the thought of hitting the jackpot gives people hope for the future, which is definitely what this country needs right now.

Did You Know...

Last week, my CMST 147 (New Communication Technologies in the Workplace) professor showed us a video that completely blew my mind. I managed to find the video online, along with the following description:

"The following adaptation of the original 'Shift Happens' presentation was created by Sony BMG Music Entertainment. The video, presented by Richard Sanders, President of Sony BMG International, was shown on 4 May 2008 to 150 of the company's top executives gathered in Rome for Sony BMG’s annual Global Management Meeting. As part of Sony BMG’s mission to improve the music experience for consumers living in 'exponential times', the video illustrates the demand for change."

The information is staggering and makes me wonder if 'I, Robot' is in our not-so-distant future.

One Reason To Not Want To Grow Up

For those of you wondering why we still had to go to class today, here's an explanation. Unfortunately, it looks like we'll never get a day off due to extremely cold temperatures.

On the bright side? At least we'll have our own version of the ol' "uphill both ways" stories our grandparents told.
